Zelensky Proposes Joint Air-Defense Shield with Allies – 29 September 2025
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on 29 September 2025 urged European allies to build a joint air-defense shield to counter escalating Russian aerial threats. Speaking via video link to the Warsaw Security Forum, Zelensky said Ukraine’s extensive experience in repelling drone and missile attacks could form the foundation of a regional defense system capable of protecting much of Europe.
He invited Poland and other European partners to participate in training programs, weapons production, and the deployment of advanced surveillance technologies. According to Zelensky, coordinated action would make the entire region significantly safer against Russian air incursions.
The proposal follows weeks of Russian drone and aircraft violations of NATO airspace, which have raised alarm among member states. Analysts say a multinational air shield could become a vital component of Europe’s security architecture, ensuring faster collective responses to future attacks.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius welcomed the concept, emphasizing its importance for European security but warning that it will require substantial funding, industrial cooperation, and time to implement. He called for closer coordination among European defense industries and more flexible regulations to speed up joint projects.
Defense experts note that a successful air shield would function much like a “drone wall,” integrating cutting-edge radar, tracking, and interception technologies. Ukraine has already announced plans to train Polish forces in advanced drone-defense tactics, strengthening operational cooperation between the two countries.
The initiative comes as Russia increases aerial activity near NATO borders, intensifying concerns over regional stability. Observers believe that if European allies quickly deploy missile systems, radar networks, and rapid-response mechanisms, the project could protect not only Ukraine but also the entire eastern flank of Europe from future Russian aggression.
