Vijay Sethupathi Breaks Silence on Casting Couch Allegations: “Cheap Publicity Stunt,” Says Actor
On July 30 and 31, 2025, Indian actor Vijay Sethupathi found himself at the center of a major social media controversy after a woman, identified as Ramya Mohan, posted allegations of casting couch behavior on X (formerly Twitter). According to her since-deleted posts, she claimed that Sethupathi, or his representatives, offered her money in exchange for “personal favors” in return for a film role—specifically, ₹2 lakh for "caravan services" and ₹50,000 as a “drive fee.”
These allegations quickly gained traction online, with some influencers and film critics questioning the timing of the post—especially as Sethupathi’s latest film Thalaivan Thalaivi has been doing remarkably well at the box office. However, within hours of the allegations surfacing, Vijay Sethupathi issued a strong rebuttal.
Speaking to a local media outlet, he stated:
> “Anyone who knows me will laugh at these allegations. This is a cheap publicity stunt from someone who wants attention and relevance.”
He further added that he has initiated a formal complaint with the Cyber Crime Cell, asking for a full investigation into the origin and motive behind the posts. The actor confirmed that he had never interacted with the woman in question and accused her of fabricating a narrative to damage his reputation.
Sethupathi pointed out that this wasn’t the first time he had been targeted.
> “Over the last seven years, I’ve dealt with multiple such smears. They come up just when something good happens in my career. This is no coincidence.”
While the woman’s identity remains unverified and her posts have disappeared, the matter has sparked a wider debate on the misuse of social media for personal vendettas. Several fans and industry colleagues came out in Sethupathi’s support, labeling him as one of the most respected and grounded figures in Indian cinema.
So far, no official police investigation has been launched, and no concrete evidence has been provided. Media houses have reached out to Sethupathi’s legal team, who confirmed that they are considering defamation proceedings against those spreading baseless rumors.
This controversy arises amid growing concerns in the Indian film industry about false allegations harming personal and professional lives. Legal experts stress the need for stronger digital defamation laws to handle such situations, especially when they emerge without evidence and get amplified through viral posts.
Vijay Sethupathi, known for his calm demeanor and versatile roles, concluded by saying he would not let this issue derail his focus:
> “My energy is for cinema and nothing else.”
