Hegseth Warns: US Will Impose Costs on Russia If Ukraine War Doesn’t End

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has issued a firm warning to Russia, stating that if the ongoing war in Ukraine does not end soon, the United States and its allies will impose severe consequences on Moscow.

Hegseth made these remarks during a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group at NATO headquarters, emphasizing that the U.S. Defense Department is ready to take actions that “only America is capable of” in response to Russia’s continued aggression.

“If we are forced to act, the U.S. Department of Defense stands prepared to play the role that only America can fulfill,” Hegseth said.

The warning comes as the conflict in Ukraine enters its third year, with Russian forces recently making advances on multiple fronts. Despite earlier rounds of sanctions and sustained military aid to Kyiv, Washington now appears ready to consider more decisive measures if Moscow refuses to end hostilities.

According to U.S. officials familiar with the discussions, potential steps under review include new economic sanctions, tighter restrictions on banking and energy sectors, and expanded delivery of advanced weapons to Ukraine.

The Trump administration has repeatedly stated that Russia’s actions pose a threat not only to Ukraine’s sovereignty but also to global peace and stability.

In response, Russia’s Foreign Ministry dismissed the remarks as “provocative rhetoric,” accusing Washington of “fueling the war rather than seeking peace.” Moscow claimed the U.S. is “using Ukraine as a pawn” to maintain its influence in Eastern Europe.

International analysts warn that any further escalation — such as new sanctions or increased military aid — could have global economic impacts, particularly on energy prices. However, officials in Washington insist that maintaining pressure on Moscow is essential until a political settlement is reached.

Hegseth’s latest statement underscores America’s readiness to move beyond diplomacy and take concrete action if necessary. His message was clear — if Russia continues the war, the United States will ensure Moscow pays a heavy price.
