Thailand and Cambodia Agree to Ceasefire – Border Tensions Ease on 28 July 2025
Monday, 28 July 2025 – Thailand and Cambodia have officially announced a ceasefire agreement today following rising tensions along their disputed border near the Preah Vihear Temple. The announcement comes after several days of military buildup, which had sparked fears of a potential conflict.
The ceasefire was finalized during an emergency meeting in Bangkok, where senior military and foreign affairs officials from both countries met face-to-face. As part of the agreement, both sides have committed to withdrawing additional troops, reopening cross-border trade, and resuming peace negotiations under the supervision of ASEAN.
The territorial conflict centers around the land surrounding the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Preah Vihear Temple. While the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled in 1962 that the temple belonged to Cambodia, nearby regions have remained contested, fueling decades of diplomatic strain.
In recent days, increased troop movement and military activity near the Dangrek Mountains raised concerns among local residents and humanitarian groups, many of whom began preparing for emergency evacuations.
