Singapore’s Population Hits Record 6.11 Million — Official Data, 29 September 2025
Singapore, 29 September 2025 — Singapore’s total population reached 6.11 million as of June 2025, marking a 1.2% increase from a year earlier, according to the latest government figures.
The milestone was driven mainly by non-resident population growth, which climbed to about 1.91 million, up 2.7% year-on-year. This category includes foreign workers, students, domestic helpers, and other temporary residents. Much of the increase came from sectors dependent on foreign labor — construction, shipyards, and domestic services — especially with major projects like Changi Airport Terminal 5 and large-scale housing developments underway.
Among residents, the citizen population rose to 3.66 million (0.7% growth), while the permanent resident count stayed stable at about 0.54 million.
Government officials stress that foreign workers are essential to sustaining the economy by filling jobs in industries facing local manpower shortages. Roughly two-thirds of non-residents are employment-pass or work-permit holders, with the remainder comprising students, dependents, and domestic staff.
At the same time, the larger population places pressure on Singapore’s limited land and resources, including housing, transport, water, and healthcare. Some citizens worry about wage competition and job displacement, though economists argue growth would be difficult without foreign manpower.
The report also highlights rapid ageing: the proportion of residents aged 65 and above continues to rise, creating greater demand for healthcare, pensions, and eldercare. Policymakers view immigration and a steady inflow of foreign talent as critical to counter low birth rates and sustain long-term economic momentum.
Crossing the 6.11 million mark reflects Singapore’s economic vitality but also underlines future challenges. Experts say careful policy choices on immigration, infrastructure, and social integration will be crucial to balance growth with liveability as the city-state adapts to a larger and older population.
