Russia Launches Massive Drone and Missile Attack on Ukraine

On 28 September 2025, Russia carried out one of its largest strikes of the war, unleashing a 12-hour barrage of drones and missiles on Ukraine’s capital Kyiv and multiple other cities. Ukrainian officials described the assault as the most intense of the conflict to date, targeting residential areas, hospitals, and critical infrastructure.

According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia fired about 595 drones and 48 missiles. Air-defense systems intercepted most of them, yet several penetrated defenses and struck civilian sites. At least four people were killed and more than 60 injured, including a young girl, while residents of Kyiv and surrounding regions sought shelter for hours in underground metro stations and bunkers.

The industrial city of Zaporizhzhia and other key hubs also suffered heavy damage, leaving at least 16 more people injured and multiple buildings in flames. Ukrainian authorities accused Moscow of deliberately targeting civilian facilities to sow fear and disrupt essential services.

President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the assault as “brutal terrorism,” urging the international community—especially the United States, the European Union, the G7, and the G20—to tighten energy-sector sanctions that finance Russia’s war effort. Ukraine’s foreign minister echoed the call, insisting the strikes were clear evidence of Moscow’s war on civilians and demanding a stronger global response.

The attack reverberated beyond Ukraine’s borders. Poland temporarily closed its airspace near the Ukrainian frontier and scrambled NATO fighter jets after detecting missile and drone activity close to its territory. NATO officials confirmed that allied air forces were placed on high alert to guard against any potential Russian incursion.

Analysts say the assault underscores Russia’s ongoing strategy of striking civilian populations and infrastructure to weaken morale and pressure Kyiv’s allies. Experts warn the war could drag on unless the international community increases military aid and imposes even tougher economic measures.

World leaders swiftly condemned the strikes, pledging continued support for Ukraine. Observers note that without stronger sanctions and coordinated diplomatic pressure, similar attacks are likely to continue, threatening not only Ukraine but the stability of the wider region.

This latest escalation highlights the urgent need for a united global effort—combining military assistance, economic pressure, and diplomatic action—to bring an end to the conflict and prevent further humanitarian catastrophe.
