Russia Bans Roblox Gaming Platform, Rare Public Protest Erupts
Russian authorities have imposed a nationwide ban on the popular online gaming platform Roblox, triggering rare public protests and renewed debate over internet restrictions in the country. The decision was enforced in early December 2025 by Russia’s internet regulator Roskomnadzor, which cited alleged violations of child safety and content moderation laws.
According to official statements, regulators concluded that Roblox failed to adequately control user-generated content. Authorities claimed the platform exposed minors to material considered harmful to their moral, psychological, and social development under Russian law. As a result, access to Roblox was blocked across the country without prior warning to users.
Roblox has been widely used by children and teenagers in Russia, allowing users not only to play games but also to create and share their own digital experiences. Before the ban, the platform reportedly had millions of active users nationwide, making the restriction particularly significant for young gamers and families.
The ban has led to an unusual public response. In a Siberian city, dozens of parents and young users gathered to protest the decision, despite harsh winter conditions. Demonstrators called for the restoration of access to Roblox and criticized what they described as increasing digital isolation. Public protests related to internet policy are rare in Russia, highlighting the scale of dissatisfaction surrounding the decision.
Reports indicate that concerns have also reached senior government offices. Kremlin-linked sources confirmed that a large number of complaints and letters from children and parents were sent to federal authorities, requesting a review of the ban. Many described Roblox as a creative and educational platform rather than solely an entertainment service.
Roskomnadzor has maintained its position, stating that the restriction will remain unless Roblox fully complies with Russian legal requirements. Officials emphasized that child protection remains the priority and denied that the move was politically motivated. No timeline has been provided for a possible reconsideration.
Notably, Russia is not the only country to have taken action against Roblox over similar concerns. In recent years, countries such as Iraq and Turkey have imposed temporary restrictions or access limitations on the platform, citing child safety, content moderation, and compliance with local digital laws as the primary reasons. These cases highlight growing global scrutiny of large gaming and social platforms that rely heavily on user-generated content.
Digital policy experts say the ban reflects Russia’s broader effort to tighten control over foreign online platforms. Analysts warn that such restrictions may drive users toward virtual private networks and unregulated online spaces. The Roblox ban has now become a key example in Russia’s ongoing debate over internet regulation, digital freedom, and children’s online safety.
