Punjab CM Approves Historic Rs. 100 Billion Loan Scheme to Boost Wheat Production
On August 9, 2025, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif approved an interest-free loan scheme worth Rs. 100 billion to support wheat farmers. This initiative aims to strengthen the agricultural sector in Punjab and ease the financial burden on farmers.
During a high-level meeting in Lahore, CM Maryam Nawaz emphasized the importance of reducing farming costs and ensuring timely sowing to achieve better wheat yields. She directed the relevant authorities to develop a comprehensive plan that includes providing fertilizers and subsidies to farmers.
This scheme is part of the Chief Minister’s Wheat Support Program, which has already disbursed over Rs. 13 billion in subsidies and increased the distribution of DAP fertilizer, especially through the Kisan Card system. Under this program, small and medium-scale farmers will receive diesel, fertilizer, seeds, and agricultural chemicals through the Kisan Card.
In Phase II, the processing fee of Rs. 1,000 has been waived, and registration of 4,200 agricultural suppliers has been completed to facilitate easy access to agricultural inputs for farmers.
Additionally, water rates (abiana) and fixed agricultural taxes have been waived for wheat growers this year. The government will also provide free wheat storage for four months to protect farmers against the effects of climate change.
Moreover, the government will cover the markup on loans up to Rs. 100 billion for flour mills and wheat license holders to facilitate wheat procurement.
These measures are part of the Punjab government’s ongoing efforts to support farmers financially and ensure food security in the province. By offering financial assistance and reducing input costs, the government aims to empower farmers and increase wheat production in the region.
