PTA Issues Strict Warning Against Sharing Illegal Online Content
On August 5, 2025, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) issued a stern warning to all citizens regarding the sharing of illegal, misleading, or objectionable content on social media platforms. While the PTA emphasized its respect for freedom of expression, it reminded the public that such freedom must operate within the legal framework of the country.
According to the PTA, a surge in the circulation of content that threatens national security, religious harmony, institutional integrity, and moral values has been observed. Sharing or posting such material is a criminal offense under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016, and those involved may face strict legal action, including fines and imprisonment.
The PTA categorically warned against the sharing of the following types of content:
Hate speech or sectarian content
Insulting or defamatory remarks against the military, judiciary, or state institutions
Obscene, vulgar, or immoral visuals
Fake news or disinformation
Content intended to create political instability or religious conflict
To support its efforts, the PTA has encouraged users to report any suspicious or harmful content through its online complaint portal and dedicated helpline. The authority is committed to maintaining a safe digital environment for all users.
Additionally, the PTA alerted the public to an increase in scams involving fake courier messages, SMS phishing, and OTP fraud. It advised citizens not to click on suspicious links, share personal credentials, or trust messages that request sensitive information under the guise of well-known platforms or companies.
The public has been advised to:
Avoid opening suspicious links or messages
Never share OTPs or passwords
Rely only on credible news sources for information
Cybersecurity experts and digital rights advocates have praised PTA’s move as a much-needed step toward controlling digital chaos and promoting responsible online behavior.
In conclusion, PTA stressed that digital freedom comes with responsibility. Every citizen must play their part in creating a secure and ethical digital space by adhering to national laws and using the internet responsibly.
