Petrol Prices in Pakistan to Change from August 16, 2025 – Petrol Slightly Up, Diesel Down

On August 14, 2025, the Government of Pakistan announced that new petroleum product prices will take effect from August 16, 2025 for the next 15 days. The latest revision shows a slight increase in petrol prices, while diesel and other fuels will become cheaper. The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) based these adjustments on changes in global oil prices and the exchange rate of the Pakistani rupee.

New Petroleum Prices from August 16, 2025:

Petrol: Rs 271.82 per litre (↑ Rs 1.32 increase)

High-Speed Diesel (HSD): Rs 272.77 per litre (↓ Rs 11.75 decrease)

Kerosene Oil: Rs 179.26 per litre (↓ Rs 6.25 decrease)

Light Diesel Oil (LDO): Rs 164.11 per litre (↓ Rs 7.11 decrease)

In Pakistan, petroleum prices are reviewed every 15 days based on international market trends and the value of the Pakistani rupee against the US dollar.

Why Petrol Increased but Diesel Dropped:

Despite the global crude oil price falling to around $62.7 per barrel, petrol prices saw a slight increase due to higher import costs, refinery margins, and the depreciation of the Pakistani rupee. On the other hand, global prices for diesel, kerosene, and light diesel oil have declined, leading to reduced import expenses for these fuels.

Impact on Economy and Public:

The decrease in diesel prices is expected to benefit the transport and agriculture sectors, as it will reduce the cost of goods transportation and farming operations, potentially easing inflation. However, the slight rise in petrol prices will affect urban commuters, motorbike users, and ride-hailing services, increasing household expenses for many families.

Public and Political Reactions:

The announcement came just two days after Pakistan’s 78th Independence Day, drawing mixed reactions from the public. Some people welcomed the relief in diesel prices, while others criticised the petrol price hike as an additional burden on already struggling citizens.

Future Outlook:

Experts believe that if the decline in global oil prices continues, Pakistan could see further fuel price reductions in the coming months. However, if the Pakistani rupee remains unstable, this benefit might be offset by currency depreciation. For now, consumers will experience a small petrol price hike alongside significant relief in diesel, kerosene, and light diesel oil prices, effective August 16, 2025.
