Pakistan Launches National AI Authority to Drive Technological Future
In a landmark move to embrace the future of innovation and digital transformation, the Government of Pakistan has officially announced the establishment of a National Artificial Intelligence Authority (NAIA). The initiative, approved on August 4, 2025, reflects Pakistan’s ambition to become a regional leader in artificial intelligence (AI), with a focus on boosting public sector efficiency, youth empowerment, and economic development.
The decision, made during a high-level cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, comes as part of Pakistan’s broader strategy to integrate modern technologies across governance, healthcare, education, agriculture, and security sectors. The National AI Authority will function under the newly approved Digital Pakistan 2030 Vision, a comprehensive policy framework aimed at transforming the nation into a knowledge-based economy.
According to the government’s announcement, the authority will oversee research, development, regulation, and the ethical implementation of AI tools. Its responsibilities include fostering innovation, supporting startups, building academic partnerships, and ensuring responsible AI use that aligns with international standards and human rights values.
One of the most significant components of this initiative is the planned launch of AI Centers of Excellence in collaboration with leading universities across Pakistan. These centers will train thousands of students in AI, data science, robotics, and machine learning. The goal is to prepare the youth for global digital competitiveness and create new job opportunities in emerging fields.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated that the authority will be fully empowered and supported with funding, resources, and legislation. "Artificial intelligence is not a luxury—it is a necessity," he emphasized. "We want to equip our youth with skills that are not just relevant today, but essential for tomorrow."
The announcement has been welcomed by the tech industry, academic institutions, and policy analysts, who believe it’s a long-overdue step toward digital maturity. Industry experts noted that while countries like the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and India have already made significant investments in AI, Pakistan's late but structured entry into the domain can still prove transformative if implemented effectively.
To ensure transparency and efficiency, a public-private advisory board will be formed, consisting of government officials, tech entrepreneurs, educators, and civil society members. The board will be tasked with ensuring ethical AI usage, especially in areas such as facial recognition, surveillance, and data privacy.
The launch of the National AI Authority marks a defining chapter in Pakistan’s digital journey. If executed with strategic vision and international collaboration, the NAIA could position Pakistan as a serious player in the global AI landscape—unlocking innovation, boosting GDP, and securing the digital rights of its citizens.
