Defence Day 6 September 2025: Honoring the Spirit of 1965 and Today’s Resolve

Each year on 6 September, Pakistan celebrates Defence and Martyrs’ Day, a solemn occasion that recalls the nation’s unity and sacrifice during the 1965 war. This day is both a tribute to the past and a reminder of Pakistan’s enduring strength in the face of challenges.

1965 War: Courage that Defined a Nation

When Indian forces crossed the border on the night of 6 September 1965, their objective was to capture Lahore by morning. Instead, they encountered stiff resistance from both soldiers and civilians. Major Raja Aziz Bhatti Shaheed (Nishan-e-Haider) gave his life defending Lahore, becoming an eternal symbol of courage.

The battles of Sialkot, Kasur, and Lahore highlighted the determination of a nation that, despite limited resources, refused to yield. Pakistani towns that bore the brunt of aggression — Lahore, Sialkot, and Sargodha — were later honored with the Hilal-i-Istaqlal for their unmatched bravery.

A key turning point came on 7 September, when Squadron Leader M.M. Alam of the Pakistan Air Force destroyed five enemy aircraft within less than a minute, setting a world aviation record that remains unmatched. His feat not only boosted morale but also cemented Pakistan’s reputation for air combat excellence.

At that time, Pakistan’s population was close to 50 million (5 crore), yet the entire nation united like a single force to defend its homeland.

President’s Address 2025

President Asif Ali Zardari, in his Defence Day 2025 message, paid homage to the martyrs and ghazis who safeguarded Pakistan’s sovereignty in 1965. He noted that today’s battles are not only fought on traditional fronts but also in the domains of cybersecurity, information warfare, and disinformation campaigns. The President called for discipline, innovation, and unity, stressing that Pakistan stands with the people of Kashmir and Palestine in their quest for freedom.

Prime Minister’s Message

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif saluted the armed forces for their valor in 1965 and in modern operations like Bunyan-un-Marsoos. He said the Pakistani nation has always supported its military and will continue to do so in every test. Emphasizing the role of the younger generation, he urged investment in science, education, and technology as tools of national defense.

Military Leadership and the Field Marshal’s Legacy

Senior commanders reaffirmed that the spirit of 1965 continues to guide Pakistan’s defense doctrine. They highlighted that today’s Pakistan is equipped with advanced missile systems, drones, and modernized armed forces, capable of countering any external threat.

The words of Field Marshal Ayub Khan, delivered in 1965, were also recalled with pride:

"On behalf of the people of Pakistan, I tell the enemy that we are free, resolute, and ready to defend every inch of our beloved land."

Pakistan–Türkiye Brotherhood

A key highlight of Defence Day 2025 came from Ankara, where Turkish Defence Minister Yaşar Güler attended a reception at Pakistan’s Embassy. He spoke of the historic bond between Türkiye and Pakistan, praising their military cooperation. Importantly, he announced plans to visit Pakistan next week to expand joint defense projects, reinforcing the message that solidarity between the two nations remains strong.

Closing Reflection

Defence Day 2025 is not merely a day of remembrance but a blueprint for the future. It teaches that wars are won not only with weapons but with unity, knowledge, and willpower. The sacrifices of 1965 remain a beacon, proving that when Pakistan stands united, no enemy can succeed.

From the fields of Lahore to the skies over Sargodha, from M.M. Alam’s record to today’s technological advances, the spirit of Defence Day continues to live on — ensuring that Pakistan remains steadfast, sovereign, and unbreakable.
