Pakistan Army Operations Leave 12 Soldiers Martyred, 35 Suspected India-Backed Militants Dead

On 13 September 2025, Pakistan’s security forces carried out major counter-terrorism operations in the tribal districts of South Waziristan and Bajaur, resulting in the deaths of 35 armed militants and the martyrdom of 12 Pakistani soldiers, according to the military’s media wing (ISPR).

ISPR reported that in South Waziristan, intense firefights killed 13 militants, while a separate raid in Bajaur eliminated 22 more. During these clashes, 12 soldiers sacrificed their lives in what officials described as one of the most significant engagements of the year.

The military identified the militants as members of the banned Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and alleged they were “Indian-sponsored,” claiming foreign backing for the attacks. However, this allegation has not been independently verified, and India has issued no official response so far.

Security forces also recovered a large cache of weapons and ammunition. Authorities urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with ongoing security efforts to prevent retaliatory attacks.

Analysts note that the operations come at a time when monsoon floods and displacement have complicated security across the region, creating opportunities for militant activity. The government maintains that these raids are part of a long-term strategy to eradicate terrorism along the Afghan border and ensure national stability.

Experts caution that direct accusations of Indian involvement may heighten already tense relations between the two nuclear-armed neighbors. The political climate is particularly sensitive as India and Pakistan prepare for a high-stakes Asia Cup cricket clash, amplifying public emotions on both sides.

Pakistan’s leadership paid tribute to the fallen soldiers. The Prime Minister vowed that the fight against terrorism will continue “until the last safe haven is eliminated,” emphasizing that the soldiers’ sacrifices will not be forgotten.

This incident underscores the persistent challenge of militancy in Pakistan’s frontier regions and the delicate regional dynamics surrounding cross-border security. While the military asserts that external actors are fueling unrest, international observers stress the need for independent investigations to avoid further escalation.
