Modi Vows to Protect Farmers, Cut Taxes, and Drive Self-Reliance on Independence Day 2025

India’s 79th Independence Day was marked by a decisive vision from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who addressed the nation from the Red Fort with a message that blended economic reform, rural empowerment, and national pride. At the heart of his speech was a firm pledge to protect farmers, fishermen, and cattle rearers, declaring they are “the top priority” for his government. Modi vowed to “stand like a wall” against any policies that could harm agricultural interests, emphasising that India will never compromise when it comes to safeguarding its farming community — the backbone of its economy. This commitment comes as global trade pressures mount, with U.S. tariffs on some Indian goods now reaching 50%. While avoiding direct reference to the United States, Modi called for a renewed focus on “Swadeshi” — promoting made-in-India products across key sectors from fertilisers and semiconductors to electric vehicle batteries and jet engines. He urged citizens to strengthen domestic production as a path toward economic independence and resilience. On the economic front, Modi announced sweeping reforms to the Goods and Services Tax (GST), aimed at easing the burden on households. By October — just ahead of the Diwali shopping season — GST will be streamlined into two simplified slabs for essential goods, reducing prices on everyday items and stimulating consumer spending. The Prime Minister also revealed the creation of a “Next-Generation Reforms Task Force” to slash compliance costs, cut bureaucratic delays, and foster innovation. In a significant technological boost, he promised that “Made in India” semiconductor chips will reach the market before the year ends, positioning India as a key player in the global tech industry. On national security, Modi unveiled the “Sudarshan Chakra” defence system, an advanced capability designed to enhance India’s military readiness amid regional tensions. This initiative reflects the government’s intent to maintain a strong defence posture while pursuing economic growth. Modi’s 2025 Independence Day address captured a unifying theme — an Atmanirbhar Bharat, or self-reliant India, capable of meeting its own needs, defending its interests, and ensuring prosperity for all. Through tax relief, industrial development, and unwavering support for rural communities, his message was clear: India’s future lies in its own hands, powered by unity, resilience, and national pride.
