Sines was chosen strategically for its unique advantages. The region hosts undersea cables that provide connectivity between Europe, Africa, and the Americas. Additionally, it has significant renewable energy capacity, which is critical to meet the high energy demands of large-scale data centers. Microsoft Vice Chairman Brad Smith stated that this investment will “position Portugal as a key player in Europe’s AI ecosystem.”

This announcement comes at a time when AI infrastructure demand has surged globally following the widespread adoption of AI tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The investment indicates that Microsoft is not only solidifying its position in Europe but also expanding its global AI footprint.
