Karachi Braces for Heavy Rain on 9–10 September 2025: PMD Issues Alert

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a high alert for Karachi, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall between 9 and 10 September 2025. The city, which has already experienced light showers and cloudy skies, is now preparing for intense downpours that could disrupt daily life and increase the risk of urban flooding.

According to PMD officials, a deep monsoon depression has developed over southeast Sindh and is likely to move towards Karachi within the next 24–36 hours. This weather system is expected to bring heavy showers, strong winds, and thunderstorms. Low-lying areas such as Korangi, Gulshan-e-Hadeed, North Nazimabad, and FB Area are considered especially vulnerable to flooding.

On 9 September, thunderstorms are expected in the morning, followed by heavier rainfall throughout the day. By 10 September, conditions will remain cloudy with additional showers likely in the afternoon. The PMD has warned that rainfall could exceed 100 mm over the two days, raising concerns about infrastructure stress.

Heavy rainfall may cause traffic jams, waterlogging, and power outages, putting additional pressure on Karachi’s already fragile urban systems. The PMD has urged city authorities to remain vigilant and ensure that drainage channels are cleared to minimize the impact of flooding.

Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab has directed municipal teams to deploy dewatering pumps, inspect drainage lines, and keep emergency response services on high alert. Citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, stay indoors during heavy showers, and keep emergency supplies at hand.

Businesses, schools, and commuters are also expected to face challenges if rain continues for long hours. In recent years, Karachi has faced severe monsoon flooding, resulting in significant property damage and loss of life. The new forecast has therefore raised public concerns and placed extra pressure on local authorities to act swiftly.

The PMD’s alert highlights Karachi’s growing vulnerability to climate-driven extreme weather events, underlining the urgent need for improved infrastructure and disaster preparedness in Pakistan’s largest city.
