Jaguar Land Rover Cyberattack Forces UK Factory Shutdown Until October 2025
On 23 September 2025, British automaker Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) announced that production at its UK factories will remain suspended until at least 1 October 2025 after a large-scale cyberattack crippled key IT systems.
The attack was first detected on 31 August 2025, prompting JLR to immediately shut down internal networks to contain the breach. Major manufacturing sites—including the company’s Halewood and Solihull plants—were forced to halt operations completely. The disruption is cancelling production of roughly 1,000 vehicles per day, creating multi-million-pound losses and affecting more than 100,000 employees and suppliers across the UK supply chain.
Industry unions report that smaller component suppliers are under severe financial strain and have asked the government for emergency assistance to cover payroll and operating costs. Worker advocacy groups have also urged the UK government to provide temporary support for affected staff.
The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) and JLR’s own cybersecurity teams are leading a joint investigation to determine the full scope of the breach and whether sensitive employee or supplier data was exposed. JLR has acknowledged that “some data may have been compromised,” though a detailed assessment is still underway.
Company executives confirmed that the restart of operations will be phased, with enhanced security protocols introduced before any production lines resume. Officials emphasise that preventing a second breach is the top priority.
Experts say the attack highlights how dependent modern automotive manufacturing is on digital infrastructure and how a single cyber incident can paralyse an entire global supply chain. Despite JLR’s strong financial standing and international reputation, this shutdown underscores significant vulnerabilities in industrial cybersecurity.
While a swift recovery is challenging, analysts believe that close cooperation among the UK government, JLR management, and suppliers could limit the long-term damage. The event serves as a wake-up call for both industry and government to invest more heavily in cybersecurity and proactive risk management to avoid similar crises in the future.
