Israel’s F-35 Stealth Fighter Monopoly in the Middle East Faces Possible End
Israel’s Air Force dominance in the Middle East with F-35 stealth fighters is potentially under threat. The planned sale of American-made F-35 jets to Saudi Arabia could shift the regional military balance.
The Pentagon has approved Saudi Arabia’s request to purchase 48 F-35 fighter jets, and President Donald Trump has publicly announced the deal, marking a notable change in U.S. policy. However, the F-35s supplied to Saudi Arabia will not match the advanced versions operated by Israel. These Saudi jets are expected to be downgraded, lacking some advanced weapons systems and electronic warfare capabilities, such as the AIM-260 Joint Advanced Tactical Missile, that Israel’s jets possess.
Israel’s Air Force has strongly opposed the sale, stating that it could undermine Israel’s Qualitative Military Edge (QME) in the region. Israel operates a specially modified F-35I “Adir” variant, equipped with unique electronic warfare systems and extensive operational experience, giving it a significant advantage over potential buyers.
Israeli leadership has also urged the U.S. administration to condition the sale of F-35s to Saudi Arabia on normalization of diplomatic relations. This move aims to ensure that Israel’s regional power balance is maintained while providing a potential diplomatic benefit.
If implemented, the deal could challenge Israel’s historical air superiority. However, since Saudi F-35s will not match Israel’s most advanced jets, and considering delivery timelines, the practical effects will take time to materialize. Israel’s monopoly is therefore facing its first real test, rather than ending immediately.
Overall, Israel’s F-35 monopoly has not fully ended, but it faces its first real challenge. The coming months will reveal the full military and strategic implications of this sale, signaling a potential shift in regional power dynamics.
