Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to Visit Pakistan on First Official Foreign Trip

Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian is set to arrive in Pakistan on Saturday, August 2, 2025, marking his first official foreign visit since assuming office. This high-profile trip is being closely watched across the region, as it signals a renewed effort by Tehran to strengthen bilateral ties with Islamabad. The visit underlines Pakistan’s strategic importance in Iran’s foreign policy and is expected to open new avenues for cooperation in trade, energy, and regional security.

President Pezeshkian will be accompanied by a high-level delegation, including Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, along with senior officials from energy, commerce, security, and border management sectors. During his stay, he will meet with Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, and other top officials to discuss key areas of mutual interest.

The visit is expected to result in the signing of several bilateral agreements and Memorandums of Understanding (MOUS). Key focus areas include:

Energy cooperation: Expansion of electricity supply to Balochistan and potential progress on the long-stalled Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project.

Trade enhancement: Plans to boost cross-border trade, simplify customs procedures, and strengthen cooperation in agriculture and industry.

Border security: Joint efforts to counter terrorism, drug trafficking, and illegal cross-border movement.

President Pezeshkian is also likely to visit Lahore and pay respects at the mausoleum of Allama Iqbal, symbolizing the deep cultural and historical ties between the two nations.

This visit follows Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s earlier trip to Tehran earlier this year, and analysts view it as a continuation of efforts to ease tensions, especially following past incidents of cross-border friction. The timing of this visit is significant, as both countries face increasing regional challenges, including instability in Afghanistan, economic pressure from Western sanctions, and shifting global alliances.

According to Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, “President Pezeshkian’s visit is a milestone that will reinvigorate Iran-Pakistan relations based on mutual respect, Islamic unity, and regional cooperation.” He emphasized that both countries support an independent foreign policy and aim to strengthen their economic and diplomatic independence from Western influence.

Experts believe this visit could lay the foundation for a long-term strategic partnership, provided both nations follow up with sustained engagement and practical collaboration. Business leaders in both countries have welcomed the move, urging the governments to focus on connectivity projects and trade facilitation.

As President Pezeshkian lands in Islamabad, all eyes are on the outcomes of this important diplomatic engagement, which could set the tone for a new chapter in Pakistan-Iran relations based on shared interests, trust, and regional stability.
