Fresh Arrest Warrants Issued for Omar Ayub; Court Initiates Absconder Proceedings
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) senior leader Omar Ayub has landed in serious legal trouble once again. On July 28, 2025, the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Sargodha issued non-bailable arrest warrants against him and also initiated proceedings to declare him a proclaimed offender. According to the court, he has been avoiding appearance for a considerable period.
The case is linked to the violent protests that erupted on May 9, 2023, following the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. During these protests, military installations and government buildings were attacked, causing widespread damage. The state has termed these acts as serious offenses against national security. Omar Ayub is one of 51 accused individuals in the case, and the court has ordered the police to arrest and present all suspects as soon as possible.
Interestingly, just a few days earlier—on July 24—an ATC in Islamabad had issued bailable arrest warrants for Ayub in connection with a separate protest held in October 2024. However, his legal team submitted a medical exemption, after which the court canceled those warrants.
PTI has strongly condemned the legal actions, calling them political victimization. Government representatives, on the other hand, maintain that the law is equal for everyone, and those involved in attacking state institutions must be brought to justice.
With general elections approaching and political tensions already high, this latest move against Omar Ayub could have a significant impact on public opinion and the political landscape. Will he be arrested this time? Or will he manage to avoid it once again? Time will tell.
