Field Marshal Asim Munir Is Not Becoming President, Confirms DG ISPR – August 6, 2025
On August 6, 2025, Pakistan’s military spokesperson DG ISPR Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry firmly dismissed all circulating news suggesting that Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir is being considered for the office of the President of Pakistan. He termed the reports as “baseless, false, and misleading” and clarified that there is no consultation in this regard, nor has Field Marshal Munir expressed any such desire.
These rumors had gained traction after some political analysts pointed out that the current government holds a two-thirds majority in Parliament, theoretically allowing for constitutional amendments. Following Asim Munir’s elevation to Field Marshal in May 2025, speculations surged that the government might be paving the way for him to become the country’s next president.
However, the Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also rejected these claims, stating that President Asif Ali Zardari is not resigning and there is no move to replace him with Field Marshal Munir. He further termed this narrative as “an attempt to malign state institutions.”
In an interview with the British magazine The Economist, DG ISPR stated:
> “All such news is based on falsehood. There is no presidential plan under consideration of any kind.”
Field Marshal Asim Munir was awarded his rank in recognition of his leadership in "Operation Bunyān al-Marsūs" and for his strategic defense planning against India. In acknowledgment of his services, the government declared May 16, 2025, as a national “Day of Gratitude.”
Meanwhile, political tensions continue across the country. On the second anniversary of Imran Khan’s arrest, the opposition organized nationwide protests. Critics argue that the balance between civilian and military leadership is deteriorating and that democratic processes are under threat.
Internationally, Field Marshal Munir is viewed as a powerful military figure. He has played a key role in reshaping Pakistan’s foreign relations, particularly with China, the United States, and Gulf countries. However, his growing influence in political matters has raised concerns both locally and globally.
As of now, the government, the presidency, and the military leadership have all clearly communicated that Pakistan remains committed to constitutional democracy and that no political restructuring involving Field Marshal Munir is being considered.
This development comes at a sensitive time, with growing political uncertainty, increasing economic challenges, and evolving global alignments. However, the firm denial by the ISPR has put an end—at least for now—to the rumors regarding any presidential role for Field Marshal Asim Munir.
