EU and Gulf States Postpone Saudi Arabia Summit Amid Houthi Attacks and Security Fears
The European Union and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) have postponed a joint summit scheduled for October 24, 2026, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as continued threats and attacks by Iran-aligned Houthi forces raise concerns about air travel and security across the kingdom.
The GCC announced the postponement on Thursday, October 15, citing continued Houthi threats against Saudi Arabia and the prolonged suspension of operations at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh. The European Union did not specify the reason for the delay, saying only that a new date would be announced in due course.
The decision follows attacks on Riyadh's international airport over the previous weekend that killed 13 people and wounded hundreds. The Houthis claimed responsibility for the strikes. The airport remains closed, creating additional difficulties for international travel, including the expected arrival of senior officials and diplomatic delegations attending the summit.
The meeting was intended, in part, to demonstrate European solidarity with Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states amid the escalating conflict. It was also expected to support closer cooperation between the two regions at a time when security concerns are affecting diplomatic engagement and Saudi Arabia's efforts to host major international events.
Despite the postponement, the European Union reaffirmed the strategic importance of its relations with the Gulf region. The bloc said it remained committed to deepening its partnership with Gulf countries. However, neither side has announced a new date for the summit.
