Balochistan Lecturer Arrested: BLA Attack Foiled – August 18, 2025

On August 18, 2025, security forces in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan, carried out a major operation and arrested Dr. Usman Qazi, a lecturer at the Balochistan University of Information Technology, Engineering and Management Sciences (BUITEMS). He is accused of collaborating with the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and its Majeed Brigade to plan a suicide attack targeting Independence Day celebrations on August 14. Chief Minister of Balochistan, Sardar Sarfraz Bugti, stated in a press conference that Dr. Qazi had been in contact with Harbyar Marri, an exiled BLA leader, and had used encrypted communications to coordinate terrorist activities. In a video confession presented by the CM, Dr. Qazi admitted to several actions, including transporting a suicide bomber to the target location on a motorcycle, sheltering an injured attacker after a police encounter, purchasing a firearm that was later used against security forces, and coordinating attacks via Telegram. Expressing remorse for his actions, he said, "The state gave me honor, and I misused that trust." This arrest not only prevented a serious terrorist attack but also highlights that even educated individuals can become involved in extremist activities. The incident underscores that fighting terrorism requires more than military operations; it also demands awareness and preventive measures within educational institutions. CM Bugti warned the public not to fall for anti-state propaganda and emphasized cooperation with state institutions. This case further demonstrates that security and development projects in Balochistan are always vulnerable to threats, making vigilance and preparedness essential. Dr. Usman Qazi’s arrest and confession also serve as a reminder that terrorism threats are not only external but can originate internally, and extremism can affect society at every level. This incident is a warning not just for Balochistan but for all of Pakistan, highlighting the need for citizens to stay aware of their surroundings, identify potential threats, and cooperate with the authorities to ensure the safety and security of lives and property.
