Amazon’s New Step: Electronic Kiosks for Instant Prescription Delivery

On October 8, 2025, Amazon revealed plans to expand its pharmacy services by installing electronic kiosks inside its One Medical primary care clinics beginning in December 2025. This marks Amazon Pharmacy’s first entrance into in-person prescription pickup, going beyond its established home delivery model.

Under this system, patients visiting One Medical clinics in Los Angeles will be able to receive common medications—such as antibiotics, asthma inhalers, and treatments for high blood pressure—immediately after their doctor appointments, via a smart on-site kiosk. The kiosks will not stock refrigerated medicines or controlled substances; instead, they will focus only on frequently prescribed medications.

Here’s how it works: once a physician writes a prescription, the patient can select a kiosk as the pickup location. Through the Amazon app, payment is finalized and a QR code is generated. By scanning this code at the kiosk, the medication is dispensed within minutes. Patients also have the option to consult licensed pharmacists via video or phone if needed.

The rollout will begin at select One Medical locations across Los Angeles, including Downtown LA, Beverly Hills, West LA, Long Beach, and West Hollywood. If the pilot proves successful, Amazon plans to expand the program to other cities in 2026, potentially partnering with additional healthcare providers and pharmacies.

One of the core goals of this innovation is to reduce shipping and logistics costs, a major expense in online prescription delivery. By situating medication kiosks near patients, Amazon can lower delivery times and costs while enhancing convenience and accessibility.

This move further cements Amazon’s growing footprint in the healthcare and retail-technology sectors. By combining digital innovation with in-person healthcare solutions, Amazon seeks to redefine how prescriptions are filled in the modern age.

Despite its promise, the initiative faces challenges—managing inventory, maintaining security, ensuring regulatory compliance, and cultivating customer trust in automated systems. If the rollout succeeds, however, it could reshape the future of pharmacy services, reduce delays, and improve patient satisfaction worldwide.
